WELLNESS & PREVENTATIVE CARE

We save you money and heartache by providing quality preventative care intentionally aimed at minimizing the risk of illness in the future and finding disease early, so we can catch problems before your pet is in crisis.

Catching medical conditions early through annual blood-work and preventative screening examinations saves you money down the line because we can often prevent or slow down the progression of a disease in that way. Preventative care often can cost 10x less than the cost of the treatment once the disease occurs.

Our appointments are generally 30-45 minutes, which is much longer than the industry average of 15 minutes. This allows us to take a thorough look at your whole pet, not just the one thing that you are concerned about that day. We strive to catch abnormalities at the outset so that we can address and treat early. Before they get severe or have greater consequences. Ideal medicine, right?

Preventative Care for all Stages of your pet’s life

New Pet Care

Do you have a brand new bundle of joy? At your initial pet visit, we will go over preventative and wellness care of your new family member. We will discuss feeding, socialization, behavior, and training. Typically we will recommend a series of visits to allow us to provide you the information you need, acclimate your new pet to visiting the hospital, and customize care to fit the needs of your pet.

Is Your Pet a Senior Citizen?

One year going by for us is similar to 8 years passing for our pets. Factor in an 8-year-old dog turning 9 – that is like a 56-year-old man aging to 63 over the span of one year. A lot can happen in 8 dog years. As a result, more frequent examinations are recommended for our senior pets, as well as diet and lifestyle changes. Dogs are considered seniors at 7 years of age, and cats at 8 years of age.

Microchipping

Did you know one in three pets will become lost in their lifetime? Without microchips, 90% will not make it home. Microchips are designed to last your pet’s entire lifetime and they link to a permanent listing in a national lost pet database. This means anytime/anywhere pet recovery service—no matter how far your lost pet has traveled. Dog and cat microchipping is a simple, inexpensive procedure. Avian and exotic pet microchipping is very similar but due to the smaller size of our patients, a short acting anesthesia is recommended.

Vaccination

Vaccines have drastically reduced animal illness and suffering over the past 50 years. Rabies vaccination is required by law for ALL dogs, cats (including indoor cats), and ferrets. It is required that these pets stay up to date on rabies vaccinations due to public health concerns. These vaccines are given at between 1 and 3 year intervals. We will discuss with you the reason and risk-benefit analysis for each vaccination and just as importantly, we do not believe in unnecessarily over-vaccinating.

Dental Care

How often do you brush your teeth and get your teeth professionally cleaned at your dentist? Dogs and cats need the same care. Regular dental cleanings and brushing help prevent more serious dental disease. Ever wonder why dogs have dog breath, brown tartar, and red gums? It is a proven fact that more frequent dental cleanings help prevent periodontal disease and associated complications such as kidney disease and heart issues like endocarditis.

CARING FOR SICK PETS

Unlike many hospitals, even if we have a full-schedule we can fit in your pet’s emergency appointment during office hours.

We know caring for a sick pet is never easy. We support you and coach you through tough decisions, grief, and transitions with the utmost compassion. We believe that as veterinarians we cannot affect positive change in your pet’s life unless we work together with you as the pet parent without judgment. We review the details of your pet’s case and come up with a diagnostic and treatment plan that is consistent with best practices in medicine. Then, in conjunction with you, we decide how we are going to proceed. We discuss this with you and get your feedback on what you are comfortable with, what you are able to afford, and what you think will work best for your pet and your household. Then we come up with a plan together to follow through.

How we care for sick pets

Theraputic Services

We are equipped to handle patients requiring IV fluid administration, treatment, and continuous daytime monitoring. We have a complete in-house pharmacy for all common oral medications and will also utilize compounding pharmacies on an as-needed basis dictated by the needs of your pet. Every person on our staff undergoes extensive training in fear-free handling and behavioral cues. What that means is that we know the correct ways to handle a situation depending on the anxiety level of you and your pet. We will use pheromones to help relax dogs and cats. We have diffusers in each room releasing these pheromones and also use the spray in our kennels and on blankets/towels.

Diagnostic Imaging

We have state of the art equipment and a facility that was built new in 2012, complete with digital x-ray, digital dental x-ray, and ultrasound. The radiology area contains a digital x-ray machine capable of point-of-reference review of your pet’s images. This allows us to immediately analyze the images for quality and minimize the number of x-ray exposures your pet will have. Ultrasound allows us to image the structures of the internal organs and get real-time images of the abdomen and chest. Being well equipped means we have the means to spot and diagnose disease faster and with less stress for you and your pet.

Pet Insurance

After much research into over 15 different pet insurance companies, we have decided to recommend Trupanion Pet Insurance for our patients. This program covers illness and accident in dogs and cats. We have found that plans covering wellness as well have higher premiums and less inclusive coverage. As a result, we feel it is most important to have pet insurance for the circumstances that we cannot plan for, and which, often end up with significant financial burden. Please click the link below for more information regarding this pet insurance program. In general, Trupanion will cover 90% of your cost for diagnostics, treatment, surgery, and medications for your pet (they do not include preventative care such as vaccines, examination, or heartworm / flea and tick preventatives). While it is best to sign up as soon as you get your pet, we also have free 30 day trials available for pet owners when coming in for an appointment. We do not receive any compensation for recommending this program. trupanion.com
